Water washable resin is a photopolymer resin made so that uncured resin on a print can be rinsed off with water, with no isopropyl alcohol bath. Elegoo, for example, sells an 8K Water-Washable Resin V2.0 at $25.99 per kilogram and says to "simply rinse printed parts with water". Whether to use it depends on your wash setup and priorities.
If you only read one thing. Water washable resin changes the cleaning liquid, not the need for gloves, ventilation, curing or careful disposal. Rinse water that carries uncured resin is not harmless, so read the safety data sheet and your local rules before you pour it away.
What is water washable resin?
It is the same family of UV-cured liquid photopolymer that a standard resin printer uses, formulated so that uncured resin can be removed with water. Standard resins are cleaned in a solvent, usually IPA, which Formlabs says dissolves liquid resin. The product pages we opened do not publish the chemistry, so the practical definition is the maker's: this resin is designed to be cleaned in water.
It is a resin type, not a printer type. Any compatible resin printer can run it if the exposure settings suit it. Anycubic's Photon Mono 4 page lists water-washable resin among the compatible materials, along with standard, ABS-like, plant-based and high-speed resins. For the wider range of resins, see types of 3D printer resin.
What do makers actually claim about it?
The Elegoo US product page for its 8K Water-Washable Resin V2.0, read on 2026-10-19, makes these claims:
- "Water-washable convenience means no alcohol bath required."
- "Simply rinse printed parts with water for easier cleanup, fewer extra materials, and a more streamlined workflow."
- A low-viscosity resin that flows quickly and evenly during printing, to help reduce trapped bubbles.
- An "upgraded low-odor formula", marketed to home studios and workshops.
Those are marketing statements from the seller, not independent measurements, and the page text we could read gives no strength, hardness or shrinkage figures. Compare the technical data sheet for any resin you plan to buy.
Is water washable resin cheaper or easier than standard resin?
It can be easier to clean, but the resin itself usually costs more per kilogram. On Elegoo's US store on 2026-10-19:
| Resin (Elegoo US store) | 1 kg price, USD | Larger sizes |
|---|---|---|
| 8K Water-Washable Resin V2.0 | $25.99 | 5 kg $89.99; 12 kg $199.99 |
| Standard Resin V1.0 | $18.99 | 5 kg $71.99; 12 kg $159.99 |
| Standard Resin V2.0 | $19.99 | 5 kg $75.99; 12 kg $169.99 |
These are different products, and the water-washable one is an "8K" resin, so the gap is not a pure like-for-like measure of the water-washable property. It does show the shape of the trade: a higher resin price in exchange for not buying and handling IPA for washing. Since IPA is a recurring purchase and a hazardous-waste item, the saving can narrow, but it depends on how much you print and what IPA costs in your area. Prices change often, so check the live listing.
Should you use water washable resin?
Choose it if your priority is a simpler cleaning routine, you dislike working with IPA, or you print in a shared or small space. Choose standard resin and IPA if you want the widest range of documented workflows and resin types, or your wash station is built for solvent. The honest case for each:
| Question | Water washable resin | Standard resin with IPA |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning liquid | Water (per the maker) | IPA at 90% or higher for most Formlabs resins |
| Flammable liquid to store | Not for the wash step | Yes. Formlabs and Prusa both call IPA flammable |
| Wash station compatibility | Check the manual | Documented by Formlabs and Prusa |
| Resin price per kg (Elegoo example) | $25.99 | $18.99 to $19.99 |
| Disposal of wash liquid | Check the SDS and local rules | Hazardous waste per Formlabs |
Can you use water in a wash station built for IPA?
Check the station's manual first. Formlabs recommends against using water in its Form Wash because water can cause rusting, and Prusa's CW1 article names only isopropyl alcohol. Those are statements about two specific washers, and they show that a water-washable resin does not automatically suit every washer. Some stations are marketed for both; Elegoo's Mercury Plus V3.0 (listed at $150.00 on 2026-10-19, struck through from $199.99) advertises "dual cleaning options" in its basket and hanging modes, and you should confirm the liquid it supports for your resin before use.
Does water washable resin remove the safety work?
No. Uncured resin of any kind can irritate skin, so gloves, eye protection and ventilation still apply; the details are in resin 3D printing safety. Washing in water also does not cure the part. Parts still need drying and UV curing, set out in how to wash and cure resin prints. The low-odor claim is a manufacturer claim and does not mean no fumes.
The rinse water is the part people forget. Water that has rinsed uncured resin off a print contains some of that resin. The maker guidance we opened (see how to dispose of 3D printer resin) says liquid containing dissolved resin must not go down a drain or into household waste, which was written about solvent. For water, read the SDS disposal section for your resin, or contact the maker and your local waste service.
How do you clean a water washable resin print?
The routine mirrors the standard one, with water in place of IPA, and only as far as the maker's instructions allow:
- Wear nitrile gloves. Remove the print from the plate.
- Rinse it in a container of water, with a soft brush for crevices, following the resin maker's time guidance.
- Do a final rinse in clean water and let the part dry fully, including hollows.
- Cure under UV. Do not cure while still wet with rinse water.
- Keep the used rinse water in a labeled container until you have checked how to dispose of it.
If a finished print is tacky, or prints are failing, fixing failed resin prints covers exposure and cleaning mistakes. Wash liquids in general are covered in what to use to clean resin prints.
Which resin printers can run it?
Most consumer MSLA resin printers can run it if the slicer profile and exposure settings suit the resin. Check the resin maker's recommended settings for your printer.
