The Bambu Lab A1 is an open-frame, bed-slinger FDM printer with a 256 mm cube build volume. It sits between the smaller A1 mini and the enclosed P-series machines in Bambu Lab's range. This page collects the maker's specifications and UK prices, explains what separates it from the A1 mini, and says who it is likely to suit.

What was announced and when

Tom's Hardware reported on 8 December 2023 that the A1 was coming on 14 December 2023, and published its review of the printer on 14 December 2023. At that time the review quoted launch pricing of $399 for the printer and $559 for the combo with AMS lite. Those are historic US launch prices, not current ones.

How it differs from the A1 mini

Both printers use the same bed-slinger layout, the same 300 C hotend rating, the same 500 mm/s and 10,000 mm/s2 figures and the same supported-filament list. The differences in the spec tables are the build volume (256 mm cube against 180 mm cube) and the maximum bed temperature (100 C against 80 C). The A1 also lists more build plate options, and its listed weight is higher at 8.3 kg against 5.5 kg for the mini. The two are compared in detail in Bambu Lab A1 vs A1 mini, and the smaller model has its own first look.

Who it suits (opinion from the specs)

This section is opinion based on the published specifications, not on use of the printer.

  • PLA and PETG printing at a modest price. The supported-filament list matches what an open-frame machine handles, and the 256 mm cube is large enough for most household parts.
  • Buyers who want color later. The AMS lite arrives in the Combo, and the £110 gap between the printer and the Combo on the UK page is the price of multi-color capability.
  • People who want ABS or ASA. Bambu Lab does not recommend those on the A1. The enclosed P1S is the maker's route for those materials. The trade-offs are covered in enclosed vs open-frame 3D printers.

Anyone choosing a first machine will find the wider checklist in how to choose a first 3D printer in the UK.

Running costs matter as much as the sticker price. The print cost calculator and the guide to 3D printer running costs in the UK cover electricity and filament.

What to test when a unit is available

  • Real print time against the maker's 500 mm/s claim on a standard test model.
  • First-layer consistency on the included textured PEI plate with no manual tuning.
  • Noise at normal speeds, given the active motor noise cancelling claim.
  • AMS lite reliability on multi-color jobs, and how much desk space it needs.
  • Measured power draw for the running-cost calculator.
