How much does a 3D printer cost? Popular models on the makers' US stores ran from $179 to $1,199 on October 11, 2026, with beginner-friendly open-frame printers at $179 to $299. This guide lists the prices, what each price band buys and the extra costs people forget.

Every price below is in US dollars and was read from the maker's own US store product page on October 11, 2026. Sale prices change often, and you should check the checkout total for tax and shipping, so treat the figures as price bands rather than a quote. UK prices are in a separate box further down.

What does each 3D printer price band get you?

Under $250 buys an open-frame learner, $250 to $450 buys a larger, faster or enclosed machine, and above $450 buys enclosure plus multi-color, resin or large-format printing.

Under $250: learn on an open-frame printer

The Ender-3 V3 SE ($179) and the A1 mini ($219) are open-frame filament printers that list automatic leveling or calibration. They suit PLA and PETG and are a sensible way to learn without a big outlay. If you want to know whether an enclosure matters for you, read enclosed vs open-frame printers.

$250 to $450: bigger builds, enclosures and multi-color

This is where the A1 ($299), the Centauri Carbon 2 ($349) and the P1S ($399) sit. An enclosure helps with materials that warp, such as ABS and ASA, and keeps drafts off the print. The combos in this band add $50 to $100 for a multi-color system on the A1 and the Elegoo model, so decide whether you really want multi-color before paying for it.

$450 and above: multi-color, resin and large-format machines

Above about $450 you are paying for enclosure plus multi-color bundles (the P2S at $549 or $749 as a Combo, the P1S AMS Combos at $549 and $579), larger builds or resin printing. The K2 Plus Combo is $1,199, which only makes sense if you plan to print large parts. Resin printing is a separate route, covered below.

Resin printers are a separate route

The Saturn 4 Ultra 16K ($499 on Elegoo's US store) is a resin printer. Resin printing gives fine detail, but it needs washing and curing steps and has its own handling rules, so it is a different workflow rather than a cheaper or dearer version of filament printing. See FDM vs resin 3D printers.

What does a 3D printer cost beyond the printer itself?

Filament is the main extra, followed by an optional dryer, a few cents an hour of electricity, and small spares and tools.

  • Filament. Elegoo's US store listed PLA at $13.99 per 1 kg spool and Bambu Lab's US store listed PLA Basic refills at $15.99 per kilogram on October 11, 2026. Other brands and specialist materials cost more: see how much filament costs.
  • A filament dryer. Not essential at first, but filament absorbs moisture. Elegoo's H1 HT dryer box was $70 on its US store. See how to dry filament before you spend.
  • Electricity. The US residential average was 18.31 cents per kWh in July 2026 (EIA, preliminary), so a printer drawing around 100 W costs under 2 cents an hour. Work out your own figure with the print cost calculator or read the running costs guide.
  • Spares and tools. Nozzles, a scraper, side cutters and a spare build plate are small purchases, but they add up over a year.
  • Slicer software. The common slicers are free to download.

How much should you spend on a 3D printer?

Spend enough to cover what you want to print plus the filament and accessories you will need, and no more.

  1. Start from what you want to print. Small models and gadgets run happily on a sub-$250 printer. Large or heat-resistant parts push you up a band.
  2. Pay for multi-color only if you will use it. A combo adds $50 to $150 on the printers listed here, so decide on your first few projects before paying extra.
  3. Look at the total, not just the printer. Add a few spools of filament and any accessories you know you need.
  4. Check support and returns. The best 3D printers for beginners and best budget 3D printers pages shortlist options by price.

How much does a 3D printer cost in the UK?

UK store prices run from £149 to £1,069 for the same nine printers, checked October 11, 2026, in pounds. Bambu Lab's pages state VAT is included. Stock, shipping and warranty terms differ from the US, so the UK first printer checklist and the Bambu Lab UK guide cover UK consumer rights, import costs and store terms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest 3D printer you can buy?

On October 11, 2026 the cheapest printers in this guide were the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE at $179 and the Bambu Lab A1 mini at $219 on the makers' own US stores, followed by the A1 at $299 and the Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 at $349. Cheaper machines exist from smaller brands, but this guide only covers printers from major makers with a current store listing, so that specifications and prices can be checked against a product page. Prices change often, so confirm the figure and the variant on the store page before you order.

Is a printer under $250 good enough to start with?

For learning the basics with PLA, yes. At $179 and $219 the Ender-3 V3 SE and A1 mini are open-frame filament printers, and Creality's page for the Ender-3 V3 SE lists automatic leveling with a CR Touch sensor, which removes a common beginner problem. Check the same feature on any printer you are considering. What you give up at this price is mostly convenience: no enclosure for warp-prone materials such as ABS and ASA, and no multi-color system unless you pay for a combo. You can move up later once you know what you want to print.

Do I need a combo with multi-color printing?

Only if you want multi-color or multi-material prints. On the US store pages read on October 11, 2026, the combos listed here cost $50 to $150 more than the printer alone: the A1 mini Combo was $329 against $219, the A1 Combo $399 against $299, the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo $399 against $349 and the P1S AMS Combo $549 against $399. Most first projects use a single color, so many people start without a combo. Decide on your first few projects before paying extra, because a combo only earns its price if you use the extra colors.

How much does filament cost?

Elegoo's US store listed standard PLA at $13.99 per 1 kg spool on October 11, 2026, and Bambu Lab's US store listed PLA Basic refills at $15.99 per kilogram. Prices vary by brand, color and material, and specialist filaments cost more. Plan on a few spools in your first month, since you will use some on test prints and failures. A filament dryer is a separate cost: Elegoo's H1 HT dryer box was $70 on its US store. It is not essential at the start, but it becomes worth considering if prints show stringing or rough surfaces. Larger spools usually lower the price per kilogram.

How much does a 3D printer cost in the UK?

On October 11, 2026 the UK stores listed the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE and the Bambu Lab A1 mini at £149, the A1 at £209, the Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 at £299, the P1S at £329, the P2S at £449 and the Creality K2 Plus at £849 for the printer alone. Bambu Lab's UK pages state that VAT is included. UK stock, shipping charges and warranty terms differ from the US, so check the UK store you plan to buy from. The UK first printer checklist covers consumer rights and import costs.
